Glitter Waterfall & More

Ah yes, another mani and another haul! I picked up a few more of the Sinful Colors fall collection and a few Pure Ice's from their Glitz collection AND some China Glaze annnnnnd.......my first OPI! Yes, thanks to Sally's Beauty Supply for adding OPI to their stores. They are a bit pricey, but this is mainly the only one I wanted. If they stock the other NYC ballet collection, I'd get those too, but for now it just looks like they sell their standard permanent collection.

First up, the mani!

I tried the reverse glitter gradient, or glitter waterfall as I called it, and it's...not my best work. It was my first attempt and I just didn't like it. Maybe it's the color combo, or maybe it just looks to messy to me, but it was a lot of work. Will be trying it again though. Colors are Tongue in Chic by China Glaze and the glitter is Kissed at Midnight by Nicole by OPI (Selena Gomez collection).

And now the haul:

3 Sinful colors, 5 Pure Ice's, 3 China Glaze's, and a pack of Burt's Bees cuticle cream.

Left to right: Coffee, Sage Rose, and Green Ocean. Burt's Bees Lemon Butter cuticle cream is soooo good. Keeps cuticles moisturized and leaves them with a lemony scent while making them easy to remove or shape. Also a fantastic (and cheaper) alternative to Lush's Lemony Flutter cuticle butter. For the holidays, I also spotted a small gift set that contains this cuticle cream, a hand cream, a lotion, and salve for around $12 at Wal-Mart. The cream by itself is $6.00.

FINALLY found All Night Long (been looking for it), Glass of Bordeaux, Royal Flush, Dazzle Me, and Monte Carlo. All are from the Glitz collection except All Night Long, which is from their fall collection. Dazzle Me is also a dupe for Hard Candy's Celebrate Sequins.

The only two I actually like from the HoliGlaze collection - All Wrapped Up and Put a Bow on It, and OPI's Pirouette My Whistle. I may get This is Tree-Mendous, but I'm not sure yet. I know I've been getting a lot of these high end brands lately, but I still love and collect my drug store brands :). They're what I started with anyway and their collections (Sally Hansen, Pure Ice, Revlon, etc) are still growing as well.

What polishes are on your wish list? Happy Haul-idays!

Sinful Colors - Hot Chilli

Okay, I've been looking for swatches of this since I bought it sometime this week and I cannot find ANY. So I swatches it myself. It's such a beautiful fall color and it represents the season so well. It's a rich tomato red with glitter that ranges from yellow to orange to green - just like the changing leaves. So it's a wonderful fall color! I guess it's part of the Sinful Colors new fall collection? I didn't get a picture of the display but it did have some of their original line colors like Nirvana and Green Ocean, so some of these definitely aren't new. Anyway, the name is also seasonally appropriate. "Hot Chilli." Mmmm a nice bowl of spicy hot chilli sounds delicious.

Application only took two coats. I don't know why, but this is the only color out of the collection to feature the silver top instead of a black one. Anyone know why this is? Does it just mean it's limited edition?

Catching Fire

The 2nd movie of the Hunger Games series is releasing soon and I wanted to do some nails to go along with it! I am aware that CoverGirl just released some hunger games nail art decals but my local walmart is selling them in a pack along with a mini glosstini varnish, and I just want the decals. But I'm not spending $8.00 on a polish I might not even use. So instead of hunting down the decals, I figured I could just make my own. The flames I did are painted directly on the nail, I did not use the ziploc bag technique and I have not even tried that yet.

Base color is China Glaze Ruby Pumps and the gold is Sally Hansen Golden-I. Are you a hunger games fan?

China Glaze - Don't Make Me Wine

Yet another purple to my collection! More of a red-violet though. This color is so rich and I only needed two coats to get full coverage. It has the slightest bit of shimmer to it. Tongue and Chic also has the same formula as this one and Strike Up A Cosmo is more of a foil finish.

Opal for October

I'm late posting this, but that's okay! My birthstone is the lovely opal and I wanted to recreate the design on my nails. How did it turn out? I say for a first attempt is was okay.

My only complaint is that the flakies are so hard to photograph! Hopefully you can see the iridescent rainbow shimmer to it.
Colors used are China Glaze's Rainbow as the base and Color Club's Snow Flakes as the flakies.

China Glaze: Strike Up A Cosmo

The swatching contintues! I want to keep this color on for a little though. Strike Up A Cosmo is from the Autumn Nights collection. It a shiny metallic rose gold. There is such a nice color change that is subtle between the pink and the gold. No natural lighting pictures because I did this so late, but I'll take some in sunlight later. No application problems, this polish is great! Pictured is two coats but you could probably get away with one coat because the polish is so dense.

China Glaze: Bat My Eyes

So I originally had swatches of Bat My Eyes, Howl' You Doin, Strike Up A Cosmo, and Don't Make Me Wine, but of course my camera battery decided to run out during the swatching. SO, here is Bat My Eyes. A black jelly packed densely with gold and black glitter. It applies evenly with two coats. Removal is a different story. Glitter everywhere. Same with Howl' You Doin. It came off the nail easily, but it got all over hands and the skin around my fingers.

Overall, it's a lovely polish and one of favorites from this collection. More swatches coming up later!

Haul: China Glaze, elf, Revlon, NYC

So my nails are still bare, but I'm probably going to end up painting them today to fix that! I have not painted them since my giraffe nails, so they need some color. My cuticles look terrible and need some moisture, so I'm going to fix that in just a bit as well. These are some polishes I have picked up within the last few weeks:

I'll start with elf. They had a sale going on where if you spend at least $15, you get free shipping, and since they don't get cheaper than that, I decided to pick out 8 polishes at $2 each. Swatches will be posted later once I get my cuticles nice and clean.

Couldn't get a decent group photo, so here they are individually. First is Bubblegum Pink. Pretty standard light pink creme. Looks like a little leaked out? Didn't notice it until now.

This is Enchanted, which is a sparkly white jelly with large hexagonal glitter pieces. I am guessing it could be a close dupe for OPI's Pirouette My Whistle, which would be AWESOME because that one is my favorite from the ballet collection. Too expensive for me though, so maybe this one will be close!

Royal Purple. Another purple to my collection! Just a standard red-violet with shimmer.

Sea Escape. This one is really neat looking, it's a dark navy blue with purple and other color shimmer throughout it, it's going to look really interesting on the nails. It's similar to deja vu by Pure Ice, but not quite the same. Much more sparkly.

The color of this polish and the one below are not accurate. It's dark and rainy here today so I couldn't use natural lighting. Anyway, this is Cranberry, and the actually color is a deep burgundy color with shimmer rather than this deep orange color shown.

Garnet. Similar to Cranberry, this is also a deep burgundy color with some reddish-purple in it. Also with shimmer.

Champagne. This color is actually more of a taupe color than the peachy orange pictured. Also with shimmer.

Chocolate. A standard brown creme. This is the only one out of the elf bunch that has been on my nails for the giraffe pattern. Pretty cheap brown if you need one because I can't find ANY browns from other brands.

Drugstore brands. Two NYC's: Big Apple Red and Tangerine creme, Wet n Wild's Candylicious, and Revlon's Ritzy.

China Glaze! Bought four of these at Sally's. Pictured is Flip Flop Fantasy (everyone needs this color) and Pool Party, which is hot pink, not orange. My camera just loves orange.

The other two are Strawberry Fields and Peachy Keen, which my camera picked up the separation of the color. Needs a little mixing.

These I bought of eBay. Budding Romance from the Avant Garden collection and Cranberry Splash from the Holiday Joy 2012 collection.

I also bought Ghoulish Glow from the Wicked/Monster Ball collection, but don't have a picture of it! I plan on getting Bat My Eyes and Howl You Doin' from the Monster Ball collection and Strike Up A Cosmo, Don't Make Me Wine, and Tongue & Chic from the Autumn Nights collection.

Bare Nails

I caught a cold so I haven't been doing much in the world of polish :(. I just ended up cleaning up off my previous nail art (giraffe print). So this is what my nails look like naked. A little staining, but nothing but a little scrubbing with whitening toothpaste will solve that. I know the edge of my thumb nail looks a little chipped, but it isn't.

This is the length I keep them before the get annoying. Just enough to see the nail ends for a french tip. What do your nails look like bare? What is your ideal length?

Liebster Award Nonimation!

Vick from her blog, Vickermania was so kind and nominated my blog for a liebster award! It's my first blog award, ever! What is it exactly? It's an award passed around the blog universe (bloggerverse?) to promote the discovery of new blogs that have the same interest as you. All you have to do is answer the questions provided by the nominator and then nominate 11 other bloggers. So you have to do a bit of a scavenger hunt to discover new blogs yourself as well. They also have to be fairly active and have less than 200 followers.

Here are the questions I have been asked:

1. What, or who, got you into nail polish and nail art?
I don't think anyone personally influenced me into nail art. I bought my first polish at walmart...a sally hansen xtreme wear in fuchsia power. Eventually I owned a black, white, the fuchsia, and a green and began to freehand a watermelon pattern on my nails. From there, I just searched online for other designs and discovered cutepolish on youtube and last year I discovered the subreddit r/redditlaqueristas.

2. How do you store your polish? Bins, drawers, boxes?
I have a 3-drawer Sterilite bin. Middle and bottom are for polishes, and the top is for supplies. I have images of it in my "Polish Storage" tab.

3. What color of polish do you own most of?
PURPLE. Even though my favorite color is green, I have more purple than anything else. From lavenders to plums to violets...so many purples.

4. Have you ever thought of making your own polish brand?
Yes, but I don't think I could do it. I feel like I would end up spending more on the materials instead of making money selling my polishes. If I could work with someone who made the polishes, I have some pretty cool nail polish name ideas though!

5. If you work, what do you do for your job? Do you enjoy it? If no, what would you like to do? If you're a student, what are you going to school for?
I work as a cashier part time at a grocery store. I'm currently taking classes for nursing, but if I could drop everything and become a nail technician, I would. I just can't right now.

6. Do you have any pets? If so, what kinds and what are their names?
Yes, I have a boxer pit mix and his name is Chance, a boykin spaniel and his name is Teddy, and a calico and her name is Sweetie Pie...but I call her Petey.

7. What is your favorite TV show? What about movie?
I don't really watch TV all that often anymore...I'm going to say How I Met Your Mother because Jason Segel is a stud. And we finally meet the mother! For favorite movie it's between Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, and Tangled.

8. What is your favorite thing about blogging? Least favorite?
Favorite thing? Being able to share my creations with other nail art lovers. I'd love to see recreations of my designs from my followers! Least favorite? Writer's/Artist's block.

9. If you could collaborate with any brand, indie or mainstream, who would it be?
I don't much about indie brands. I don't own any and don't know where to begin.

10. How do your friends and family feel about your nail hobby?
Complete support. Some of them want me to do their nails!

11. What are your top 5 nail polishes?
In no particular order, Flirt by Sally Hansen (Xtreme Wear Collection), Deja Vu and Not Now by Pure Ice, Selena by Nicole by OPI, and Watermelon Rind by China Glaze.

I will do some searching for nominees and post them here in an edit because it is so late...

The nominees:

Nasha's World
Sieze the Nail
Nails For Dummies
Glitter, She Wrote
The Nail Art Hobby
Nail Art by Kelly-Ann
Cutesville Daily
Nail Art for Funn
Break Rules, Not Nails
Gee Your Nails
Sharp As Nails

As for my 11 questions:
1. How many polishes do you own?
2. Who or what inspired you to get into nail art?
3. What was the first bottle of polish you purchased on your own?
4. What inspired you to create a blog for your nail art?
5. What is your favorite thing about blogging? Least favorite?
6. Have you considered getting a cosmetology license or becoming a nail technician?
7. What are some of your favorite nail artists on blogger/wordpress and youtube?
8. How do you store your polishes?
9. What is the most amount of money you have spent on one bottle of polish?
10. What is your go-to color for a manicure?
11. What are some tips for nail art beginners?

Freehand Giraffe Print

So these were pretty easy to do, just took a lot of drying time. I wanted to do something with neutral tones and after having purchased some polishes from eyeslipsface.com (e.l.f.), I went with these giraffe nails! I was originally going to try to the wood-grain stamp from my Winstonia nail plates, but after a few tests with it, my polishes didn't really stamp well with it. I guess the formula isn't suited for it. Normally my silvers are best for stamping.

Pictured is two coats of Kalahari Kiss by China Glaze, with freehand giraffe spots painted on with a dotting tool using e.l.f.'s Chocolate.
Also including my right hand because it turned out so well! Also, my top coat (Out the Door) is never this shiny. Maybe it's because I used a lot more than I usually do? I didn't want it to smudge my giraffe spots, so I used more than I usually would...but it turned out a lot more shiny for these!

Rimmel London - Caramel Cupcake

Bought this at Walmart for $1.50 when I was shopping around for another black and white polish since mine are getting goopy. I just wanted a basic black, so I ended up getting the one by Rimmel. It's cheap and small, but it'll get the job done. Anyway, the small but lovely collection caught my eye and now I have four polishes from this line and this is the one I tried first.

The application is pretty good! Formula isn't runny or goopy, everything went on smoothly, except one or two streaks, but that was because I was applying the brush too hard. The brush on these took a little to get used to. They're similar to the wet n' wild ones, where the brushes are wide.

As for the label...do they really dry in 60 seconds? I'm going to go with no, but I didn't really time myself. The only polish I have that does that is my base coat. Even my top coat doesn't dry in 60 seconds! So I really doubt they dry that fast. It may be tacky in 60 seconds, but definitely not solid dry.

This is two coats of Caramel Cupcake. It's such a nice nude color, and I don't own many neutrals/nudes! This color also makes a nice base color for a giraffe design, which I plan on doing once I get a proper brown color for the spots.

Have you tried Rimmel London's 60 Second Nail Color? Have any favorites from this collection?

New YouTube Channel!

I now have a public youtube channel for my nail art designs, techniques, and tutorials! Check it out at www.youtube.com/user/sprinkleofpolish. I wanted to use a different nail than my blog because to me, The Cuticle Canvas sounds like a better name for a blog whereas Sprinkle of Polish sounds better for my video account. Right now there is only one video up and it is a tutorial. I will upload more videos of reviews, nail care (to finally have something on my "nail care" page!), designs, and techniques, all having to do with nail art. I'm just getting started with youtube and no experience in recording myself painting nails, nor being that close to something to record while keeping my camera in focus. Let me know what you think about it once I get more videos uploaded!

Galaxy Nails

I've been wanting to paint these for awhile and now I've got around to doing them! I found a super simple tutorial that I used and will post it at the end of this post. They were not incredibly time consuming either! And I love how they turned out.

Basically, you just paint your nails black, then gently sponge on the galaxy colors, one by one, so they overlay enough to create a milky way effect. The big white dots are supposed to represent bigger stars, but this is not necessary. In fact, I think it looked a lot better BEFORE I added the dots. The smaller stars are displayed thanks to China Glaze's Fairy Dust, but really any micro glitter should work for this.

Here is a link to the tutorial I used: Galaxy Nail Tutorial
The only polish I used that was the exact same was Fairy Dust. I improvised my colors to match hers.
The colors I used were Sally Hansen's Black Out for the base color, Blue It, The Real Teal, and Plum Power, Pure Ice's Not Now and Fairy Godmother for the galaxy effect, Sinful Color's Snow Me White for the stars, and China Glaze's Fairy Dust to top it with.

Mini Haul from eBay

I window shop on eBay wayyy too much, but this was a pretty good offer. Normally Nicole by O.P.I's are $7.99 each at my retail and department stores, but these were $3.99 each plus $2.00 shipping. Not a huge discount, but hey, saved a few dollars. Anyway, I picked these up from the Selena Gomez collection. I bought two, and one I already had. I picked up "Inner Sparkle" and "Kissed at Midnight." They are such lovely glitters, must try them out soon. I had "Selena" already, which is a pink-peach with light shimmer. If I can pick up more from this collection, it would be "Sweet Dreams" and "Confetti Fun."

There are a lot of polishes in this collection, but I feel like I may have dupes, or at least close dupes of most of them. For example:

Hit the Lights, a bright yellow creme - I have NYC New York Color's Midtown Mimosa although Hit the Lights may be darker.

Naturally, a bubblegum pink creme - Pure Ice's Love, but it Love has more shimmer in it. Any bubblegum pink would dupe Naturally.

Pretty in Plum: A reddish purple with high shine - Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear's Plum Power or Posh Plum, both of these are so close to being a 100% dupe for Pretty in Plum.

Love Song: A purple creme - I have more purples than any other color in my collection, and you'd think I'd at least have one in this particular shade, but I don't! It's a deep lilac, similar to Pure Ice's Fairy Godmother, and even that one isn't the correct shade. It's darker. So this is one purple I do not have a dupe for, but it is worth mentioning.

These photos are in artificial light, natural light photos will be posted later - along with swatches!

The quality is bad. My camera would not focus, even in super macro mode which is what I use to take a good majority of the photos I post here. New photos will be posted later.

Sally Hansen: Mermaid's Tale

Ah, so majestic. This shade brings all of the colorful elements I picture a mermaid would have what with its hints of various blues and greens. This is a chunky glitter polish with a clear-pale blue jelly base, so wear a polish underneath it for a more vivid color. The color I'm wearing underneath is two coats of NYC New York Color's "Skin Tight Denim." One coat of Mermaid's Tale, some topcoat, and you're good to go.

My cuticles need work...
Within the next week I may try out some galaxy nails depending on if I want to use dark colors again. I may switch up to some pastels or neons and then galaxy. I know I want to do them though.
